Our Suspension Bridges

History - page 2

In this view, taken on the bridge, you can see the field fencing used both as a handrail and to keep any one from sliding or falling off of the bridge. Notice that even this close to the end, the cables are all ready below the top of the four-foot-high fence. This is safe, but timid souls will find the handrail provided by the fencing alone does not provide them with much assurance. The fencing, although pulled tightly from tower to tower, has a lot of movement in the center of the bridge. A far better solution would be for the fencing to be attached to the stringers hanging from cables above the top of the fence.

Since the Flood of 97 took this bridge almost exactly 2 months after completion, I would soon get the chance to provide this better solution! *grin*
